Kashmiri girls have been bringing laurels to India in various fields – be it sports , education or music and art. The country yet again swells her chest with pride.
Not long ago, Nelson Mandela, the South African anti-apartheid revolutionary said,
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”Nelson Mandela
Growing up in the uncertain times prevailing in Kashmir, Maleeha Zehra, had a similar goal in mind, to serve the people of Kashmir and do an in-depth study on the subject.
Maleeha, a student of Class 12th of Delhi Public School, Srinagar, has bagged a US $70,000 scholarship to the prestigious Georgetown Washington University’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar. Growing up in a joint family, Maleeha says that it has helped her value relations and the people around her. She further adds that every person she comes across has had an impact on her and these relationships have helped build her personality. With these in her mind and a special inclination towards politics, she took up humanities in 11th and 12th, much against the suggestions to go with the common crowd of science students by well-meaning relatives. She then started preparing for the scholarship for two years. But the lockdowns following the abrogation of article 370 and Covid-19 were proving to be a major hurdle in her preparation and efforts. The lockdown coupled with the restriction on internet services made her path even more difficult. Not one to give up easily and with a constant support of parents, siblings and teachers, Maleeha applied for the scholarship in Georgetown University. Her excellent grades and a student exchange programme she attended in Brazil in 2018, gave a major boost to her application. And finally, earlier this year, she received her scholarship letter. The only worry that looms around her for now, is the fear of postponement of class 12th examination and travel restrictions aboard due to surging corona virus cases.
In the future, armed with her degree, she wants to come back to her country to eradicate poverty and make it a better place to live-in. She wants to shed light on the human rights violation around the world. She is a true inspiration for young students to set noble goals and work hard towards achieving them.
