Conflict has caused a lot of damage and destruction, including conflicts, poor education, physical health and mental disorders, mental depression and discontent of the masses. The most disappointing aspect of this conflict is that young people have been the victims of the past three decades.
The media is considered to play an important role in conflicts. The role of mass media in conflict situations has attracted the attention of many studies. The media is a platform to discuss the causes and consequences of conflict and to advocate for peaceful solutions. Although the media is sometimes accused of causing conflict, it has great potential for conflict resolution and peace building. Negative news publicizes political opponents or increases the legitimacy of support for peace.
Community radio stations play a vital role in fostering communication, empowerment, and development within communities worldwide. These radio stations focus mostly on struggle, conflict, human rights violations, which are good topics for academics. While the development of community radio stations has been observed in various regions of India, the Kashmir Valley has yet to establish such platforms. This article explores the significance of community radio stations in Kashmir, highlighting the potential benefits they can bring to the region and its people.
‘Radio Raabta’ community station is one such station which provides not just entertainment but also a platform for locals to air their grievances. The ‘Radio Raabta’ 90.8 FM ‘Dil Se DilTak’ has a reach of around 20 km in radius, covering parts of Pulwama and Kulgam districts in South Kashmir as well. The station plays Hindi and Punjabi songs after acquiring intellectual property rights. Two radio jockeys also provide informative snippets like traffic situation and weather, as well as interviews with local achievers, especially youths. The first effort to use radio for the development of the community was made in 2009 when Panos South Asia, running similar programmes elsewhere, started a community radio program in Awantipora in collaboration with the IUST Community .
Radio Station are capable of revitalising the connect within different segments of the community. This will provide a good platform for a community dialogue, sharing of information, art & culture. It will build a community environment, which is better connected with issues which are local and important to the community. This Community Radio Station will be highlighting & showcasing the hidden talent of Kashmir, especially local entrepreneurs, musicians, sportsman and artists to the Awam of Kashmir and the rest of the world. These stations have the potential to amplify local voices, address issues, empower marginalized groups, strengthen community engagement, disseminate information, promote peace building, and aid in disaster preparedness and response. It is essential to recognize the value of community radio and work towards its establishment in Kashmir to facilitate communication, understanding, and development within the region and its communities.
