India has made significant strides toward becoming a developed country over the past few decades. The vision of a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) has been an aspiration that has guided the nation’s policies, strategies and national programs. In the context of Jammu & Kashmir the region has undergone substantial changes especially in recent years. This essay aims to explore the progress of India and Jammu and Kashmir individually and in tandem examining their development in terms of economy, infrastructure, social equity and political progress. India, with its unique cultural, historical and geographical diversity, has made notable progress on several fronts.

India’s economy has grown steadily, with the country emerging as the world’s fifth largest economy by nominal Gross domestic product. The economic reforms of the 1990s including liberalization, privatization and globalization have played a key role in transforming India into a competitive player in the global economy. The country has seen growth in sectors like Information Technology, manufacturing and agriculture albeit with some challenges in terms of income disparity India’s industrial sector has evolved, especially in technology and pharmaceuticals. With the rise of major global tech companies India is now a leader in outsourcing particularly in the Information Technology sector. The Make in India initiative has also aimed at boosting manufacturing with mixed but significant success. Innovation has been at the heart of India’s progress, with the country now home to numerous start-ups and technological advancements, especially in the fintech and digital payments space.

India has made significant progress in literacy. healthcare and poverty alleviation. Programs such as Swachh Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (financial inclusion) and Ayushman Bharat (health insurance) have helped uplift millions, India has also improved life expectancy and significantly reduced the poverty rate. However, challenges remain in rural areas where access to quality education and healthcare is still limited. India has maintained a relatively stable political system despite challenges. Democracy, federalism and decentralization of power have been crucial in maintaining political stability. Over the years, political reforms like Goods and Services Tax have streamlined economic activities and anti-corruption measures have been introduced although there is room for further improvement.

Jammu and Kashmir a region, historically affected by political instability, socio-economic challenges and military conflicts has witnessed transformative change in recent years. After the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, Jammu and Kashmir became a Union Territory enabling greater central control and oversight in development initiatives. Before the 2019 changes, Jammu and Kashmir’s economy largely depend on agriculture, handicrafts and tourism. The recent push for infrastructural development including new highways and bridges has revitalized the local economy. The government has promoted projects in hydroelectricity, manufacturing and agriculture to diversify the region’s economic base.

Infrastructure development has been a key focus. The construction of new roads, bridges and railway lines has greatly improved connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of India. The construction of the Chenani Nashri Tunnel and the upcoming Jammu Srinagar Expressway is major milestones. This connectivity will enable better access to markets and services, enhancing economic potential. With the advent of several initiatives to boost education, there has been an improvement in literacy rates in the region. The government has also focused on creating skill development centers to improve youth employability. The Jammu and Kashmir government has worked with private companies and educational institutions to set up new educational hubs, which is crucial for human capital development

Since the abrogation of Article 370 Jammu and Kashmir has experienced a shift in its political structure. The government’s approach to security has undergone a transformation, with an increased emphasis on counterinsurgency operations and the restoration of law and order. While these changes have brought some challenges, they have also paved the way for improved governance, transparency and a more unified development agenda.

The vision of a “Viksit Bharat” extends to every region and Jammu and Kashmir’s progress is an integral part of India’s overall development story. The following areas reflect shared progress between India and Jammu and Kashmir, one of the most profound areas of development in both India and Jammu and Kashmir has been the push for digital transformation. The Digital India initiative has been pivotal in providing government services through electronic platforms including in Jammu and Kashmir.

The region has benefited from initiatives like e-education, e-health and online government services that have improved access for remote and rural populations.  Ayushman Bharat, a scheme to provide health insurance to low income families has reached Jammu and Kashmir as well. The region has witnessed improvements in medical facilities with new hospitals and health centers being established. Public health initiatives like vaccination drives have also been successful in improving the health outcomes of the region.

Both India and Jammu and Kashmir are increasingly focusing on environmental sustainability. India has made commitments to combat climate change and Jammu and Kashmir with its rich natural resources has been working on projects for sustainable tourism and renewable energy especially hydroelectric power.

Despite substantial progress there are still several challenges that remain for both India and Jammu and Kashmir: While India has seen significant economic growth, income inequality remains a concern. Similarly, Jammu and Kashmir face issues of uneven development with rural areas still lagging behind urban centers. Politics remains a sensitive issue with tensions still simmering. For long term peace, the political situation in Jammu and Kashmir and prosperity of the region requires not just economic development but political reconciliation and a sustained peace-building effort. The security situation continues to be an issue in Jammu and Kashmir. Ensuring a secure environment for both residents and tourists remains essential for sustained development. The journey of both Viksit Bharat and Viksit Jammu and Kashmir has been marked by remarkable achievements but also persistent challenges. While India is steadily marching towards becoming a global economic and political power Jammu and Kashmir’s progress is integral to the nation’s development story. A developed Jammu and Kashmir will contribute immensely to the national vision of a Viksit Bharat.
