Boniyar Temple stands as a testament to the Kashmir valley’s rich history of art, culture, heritage and the religious shift through the centuries. Often hailed as one of the best preserved monument of Kashmiri heritage, this ancient temple offers a glimpse into the bygone era of the valley’s cultural and religious traditions. Located along the Baramulla -Uri highway, on the banks of River Jhelum, the Boniyar Temple’s exact ongins remain shredded in mystical mystery. While estimates place its construction between 8th and 12th centuries AD, the lack of clear inscription leaves room for speculation. What is certain is the temple’s unique architectural style, a blend of indigenous Kashmin elements and a mainstream Hindu temple.
Carved in Granite, Whispering Stories
Unlike most Kashmiri temples built with limestone, Boniyar stands out with its striking course granite exterior. This unique choice of material adds to its enduring presence, withstanding the ravages of time for centuries. The temple’s design showcases intricate carvings and motifs, each whispering tales of ancient beliefs and practices. The double-chambered gateway, the colonnaded courtyard with 53 cells, and the intricately designed shikhara (tower) are just a few examples of the craftsmanship that went into its construction. Originally believed to be dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple currently houses a Shiva Lingam. The reasons for this shift remain unclear, adding another layer of intrigue to the Boniyar’s story. Some suggest it might be due to historical events or changing religious practices over time.
