Established in October 2022, the Drug De-addiction Centre (DDC) at Kupwara emerged as a beacon of hope in the battle against drug addiction. Thanks to this pioneering collaboration between Indian Army and the Sub District Hospital, Kupwara, over 550 individuals have been able to free themselves from the crutches of drugs and join the mainstream.
The DDC operates on the principle that true rehabilitation extends beyond just addressing the physical aspects of addiction. Their approach combines psychological expertise, medical interventions, and community engagement to create a comprehensive support system support system for individuals seeking recovery.
Ms. Tabassum, a professional psychologist at DDC, plays a pivotal role in utilising Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) to address the intricate relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Ms. Tabassum elaborates on the benefits of CBT: “Cognitive Behavior Therapy is a transformative tool that equips individuals with the skills to identify and challenge negative thought patterns. By modifying these patterns, we empower individuals to alter behaviors associated with drug addiction, fostering healthier coping mechanisms and sustainable recovery.”
Dr. Mehraj, a doctor from District Hospital, Handwara, dedicates three days a week to on-site consultations, offering Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). On the remaining days, he provides telemedicine support, ensuring a seamless continuum of care. Dr. Mehraj elucidates the significance of MET in the recovery journey: “Motivational Enhancement Therapy is a client-centered approach that strives to evoke intrinsic motivation, aligning with our commitment to treating each person as a unique individual with distinct needs and motivations.”
Since its establishment, DDC Kupwara has witnessed success in assisting over 550 individuals on their path to recovery. Under the patronage of Indian Army, the success of DDC extends beyond clinical metrics, permeating into societal perceptions. The outreach efforts and awareness campaigns have been instrumental in dismantling the social stigma surrounding drug addiction. By fostering understanding and empathy within communities, Indian Army, through DDC, aims to create an environment where seeking help is encouraged, rather than judged.
In agreement, Ms. Tabassum highlights the transformative power of community engagement: “Breaking down societal barriers is integral to our mission. Through workshops and interactions, we’ve witnessed a shift in perception, leading to a more supportive community that comprehends the complexities of addiction.”
Dr. Shafi, Medical Superintendent, Sub District Hospital, Kupwara, echoing the sentiment of collective responsibility, added, “We are committed to facilitating the provision of necessary medicines to the DDC. In case some medicines as per the unique needs of individuals undergoing rehabilitation are not available, we get them from the District Hospital. Additionally, we provide doctors on call to the DDC, ensuring expert medical assistance whenever required.”
The efforts to wean the youth away from drug menace contributes to the overall safety and harmony of our communities. DDC’s dedication to awareness and outreach drives aligns with a broader vision of preventing antisocial activities and creating a healthier, more vibrant society. We must all unite in this shared mission, working towards a society where addiction is met with understanding, treatment is readily available and every individual has the opportunity to reclaim a life of purpose and contribution.
