In maths, all successful equations have the right mix of variables, each contributing something necessary to the final result. In many aspects, tourism is based on the same principle. The identity of a destination is made up of natural beauty, cultural heritage, adventure, hospitality and memorable experiences. Jammu and Kashmir has all these elements in a special way. The Union Territory’s blend of spectacular landscapes, rich traditions and burgeoning adventure tourism potential continues to draw travellers from across the country. Now, this diverse appeal has been acknowledged nationally, with Jammu and Kashmir winning the “Best Tourist Destination Award at India Travel Mart (ITM) Goa 2026”.
The award is an encouraging milestone for the tourism industry of Jammu and Kashmir and a reflection of the work being done to enhance its presence in the rising travel market of India. J&K Tourism Department was represented by Deputy Directors Rashid Raina and Pankaj Sasan to receive the award. Such recognition, in addition to the award, offers an opportunity to promote the region to a wider audience and introduce its tourism potential to people looking for new travel experiences.
The J&K Tourism Pavilion at ITM Goa 2026 received a lot of attention from the members of Goa’s travel trade fraternity. The Travel Professionals were eager to know about the varied Tourism offerings of the Union Territory and enquired about the experiences available in the region. These interactions are important because tourism is not built by promotion. It also needs to build up connections with travel agencies, tour operators and other industry players who will help destinations draw more visitors. Events like ITM Goa provide a platform to forge these connections and explore new opportunities for collaboration.
The biggest strength of Jammu and Kashmir is the variety of experiences that it offers. The region has much more to offer apart from the well-known attractions of Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Dal Lake that are already popular with travellers. It is the traditional handicrafts, local food, cultural festivals, village life and warm hospitality that make the travel experience more profound. Each season has its own beauty. It could be the blossoms of spring, the greenery of summer, the golden hues of autumn or the snow-covered scenes of winter. This variation of the seasons helps J&K to attract tourists throughout the year.
Another important development during the event was visit of J&K officials to National Institute of Water Sports in Goa. The visit helped explore possibilities of institutional collaboration especially in the areas of water sports and adventure tourism. Such initiatives may offer new opportunities to diversify tourism activities and to attract visitors for experiences other than traditional sightseeing.
The real opportunity going forward is to take this recognition and translate it into long-term progress. Strengthening the tourism ecosystem in the region can be done by promoting lesser-known destinations, improving tourist facilities, developing adventure activities and encouraging local participation. More local involvement in the community can also provide jobs and opportunities for young people to be part of this growing sector. It is indeed a proud moment to win the Best Tourist Destination Award.
